RIP Challenge 2009--Completed (sort of)

The RIP Challenge was hosted by Stainless Steel Droppings.

So, I had originally stated I would read four books from the following pool of books:

1. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

2. 206 Bones by Kathy Reichs

3. The Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink

4. Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty

5. The Road by Cormac McCarthy

6. Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

I ended up reading:

206 Bones by Kathy Reichs (my review here)

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty

3 out of 4 completed (not too bad, I guess!)

I am still in the process of reading Frankenstein...along with everything else...so I don't know when I'll finish it!

Still, I will be looking forward to this challenge again next year!

101 Fantasy Reading Challenge (originally posted on TTBA in October 2009)

LATEST UPDATE: This is now a perpetual challenge.  There will be a mini-challenge for October, November and December.  Go to the dedicated blog (click on here in the update below) to find out what it is and the prize!

UPDATE:  I have taken over this challenge.  The dedicated blog is here.

I've decided to take on Bella's, at A Bibliophile's Bookshelf, 101 Fantasy Reading Challenge.  I'm going to follow her lead and pick 30 books (of which I already own)...15 from the actual 101 and 15 from the rest of the list.

Addendum:  I'm adding one more book to the latter 15...I recently acquired The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss so I'm adding it to the list.  This brings my total to 31 books!

So here are the rules:

1. Pick the number of books you want to read. It can be a mixture of the top 101, and/or the whole list. For example, you might want to aim to read 5 from the top 101 and 5 from the rest of the list.

2. Create a list of the books you want to tackle. You can create a list now, or add them as you go. Completely up to you.

3. This challenge is now a perpetual challenge.

4. Please post the direct link to your 101 Fantasy Reading Challenge post. (so that other participants can visit and see what you are reading)

Click on Bella's blog title above to go to the Mr. Linky and sign up.  Be sure to do your post first and then link it there.

Here is the PDF version of the entire list of the 101 of the Best Fantasy Books.

Now, on to my list!

  1. New Moon--Stephenie Meyer
  2. Eclipse--Stephenie Meyer
  3. The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks
  4. A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

Happy Reading!

1001 Books Challenge (originally posted on TTBA in August 2009)

UPDATE:  I am restarting this challenge this month (November) because I have not committed to it well.  It is a perpetual challenge, but I still need to commit to it!

I must be on a challenge kick because earlier on Wednesday I joined my first challenge ever, the RIP Challenge. Well, I was over at the bloggers group on Library Thing and I came across this challenge being hosted by Melissa at Coffee, Books, and Laundry.

The 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list is pretty daunting, but I consider that since reading is so very important to me, then this is the challenge that should be ongoing in my life. So I accept this challenge with gusto and maybe just a little apprehension (take a look at the list here and you'll see what I mean).

The rules are relatively simple actually and are as follows:

Must read 1 book a month from the list.

Must rotate lists every month.

(For example, August I will take a book from the 2000's list, then following month choose a book from the 1800's.)

The beauty of this is that I am already reading Frankenstein for my B & N book club and for the RIP Challenge and it's number 931 on the list!

If you decide to accept the challenge, be sure to go over to Melissa's blog (link above) and leave a comment. She doesn't really have an "official" sign up, but I'm sure she will be interested in everyone else's progress. I know I will!

Happy reading!

RIP Challenge 2009 (original post from TTBA August 2009)

I have been wanting to do a challenge since I started my blog in early August, but there are so many out there, I have to admit I was a little overwhelmed. Then tonight as I was looking through the new posts of blogs I follow, I saw the RIP Challenge on Bibliofreak's blog. This challenge is hosted by Carl from Stainless Steel Droppings and it consists of the following guidelines:

Choose from these genres:

mystery
horror
gothic
dark fantasy
suspense
thriller
supernatural

The number of books that have to be read are 1, 2, or 4....very easily accomplished!
This challenge runs from September 1st through October 31. A very Halloween appropriate challenge!

So now, without further ado, here are the books I have chosen to read (I'm doing four!):

(Addendum: I'm adding a couple more books to the pool because I need to read these before the movies come out in October)

1. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
2. 206 Bones by Kathy Reichs
3. The Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink
4. Elsewhere by William Peter Blatty
5. The Road by Cormac McCarthy
6. Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane

I'm excited that my first challenge is in one of my favorite book genres--horror and the like! I am SO ready to begin!
